Friday 30th May – Forsayth

Wow. Wow, Wow what more can I say.  The trip on The Savannahlander Train was absolutely wonderful.  The driver was very informative with a sense of humour as well and made the trip so enjoyable with his anecdotes  as well as his immense knowledge of the train as well as the countryside we were traveling through.  There was a seat next to the driver that we could all take a turn at sitting in which made us feel like we were actually driving the train, also a great vantage spot for photos along the way. When we stopped for morning tea the driver and his co driver set up a table with a tin of biscuits and Coffee, Tea as well as Bonox which was served in red plastic mugs that we got to keep.  There is a whole other story just on the mugs. Then when morning tea was finished the driver backed the train up so we could take a video as he came through the cutting and then backed the train up again so we could all take still photos. I am sure everyone got some great photos, I certainly did. The story with the mugs is, that you can go onto the web site for the Savannahlander and log pictures that you take with the mug in different and spectacular places.  They already have a picture of the mug in Antarctica so that is a bit different. I may take mine on the River Cruise next year and pose it next to a Castle, how good would that be.????  Our lunch was at The Einsaleigh Pub which is where we got off the train and the rest of the passengers, after lunch, continued their journey on to Cairns. We had a choice of Wraps, Ham & Salad, Chicken & Salad or just salad which was rung through to the pub by the co-driver and was waiting for us when we arrived.  Also a nice slice of homemade cake…yummy.  Before lunch we wandered  approx. 500metres to the Copperfield Gorge, spectacular  and would have loved to have had enough time to climb down to where there was a sandy beach.  A bus took us back to Forsayth where we spent an afternoon fossicking around the town and countryside to see what we could find.  First was an old mine then it was over to the Airport where The Flying Doctor had his plane sitting on the tarmac while he visited the local Hospital.  Dinner was also a highlight of our day.  We went to The Goldfields Tavern in Forsayth for a counter tea with the only item on the Menu being fish & chips (which I must say were very, very nice) Some interesting things that we noted were.

  • ·         Wine served in a little (piccolo) bottle
  • ·         Kids in school uniform behind the bar serving
  • ·         Plastic Plates with our dinner on them
  • ·         Dusty, gritty Tables
  • ·         Smokers just behind an open brick wall
  • ·         Plastic Beer glass for my Shandy
  • ·         Publican with no shoes

The only thing I can say is “what an absolutely out of this world atmosphere” it was extremely laid back and very friendly. We got talking to a couple from Maryborough that came up here to fossick for Gold.  Apparently there was a man in the Hotel that found a 7oz nugget today and there was an excitement around him.  I also met a girl by the name of Liz and we are going around to her place tomorrow morning to have a look at Agates and Thunder Eggs that she has collected.  The majority of people here in this town are fossickers and we appear to be the only tourists.
