Thursday 22nd May Vince Connolly Free Camp (192) – Daly Waters Free Camp

Shopping at Katherine this morning and then onto morning tea at a camp 46kms south of Katherine.  While we were stopped we noticed 4 people in the bush fossicking around.  Of course it got the better of Barry so he went over to ask what they were up to.  Seems that they were from The Australian National University and were Biologists looking for different species of skinks and lizards.  They had travelled from Canberra across the top end of Australia and were on their way back home when we ran into them.  They had approx. 500 different specimens and there are 4 different types of skink just in the area where we had our morning tea.  Very interesting.  On to Mataranka for a swim at Bitter Springs which is on the North side of Mataranka.  We didn’t go there last time so it was something different. Paul and I were the only 2 not to get into the water, it looked a little slimy for me so I just took photos. Everyone had a nice swim and Barry & Maree floated with the current down to the footbridge which they assured everyone was fabulous.  Lunch at Mataranka and then 20kms south I saw my first Eagle for the trip. Actually 2, one was sitting in the middle of the road at some road kill and the other I spotted sitting in a tree when the first Eagle flew off towards it.  Maybe he was waiting for lunch. They are truly magnificent creatures and I absolutely love them. Unfortunately the photos didn’t turn out as I had expected…sad. Called into Daly Waters for a cooling ale and then headed to our free camp which we found when traveling with Joy & Wayne in 2011.  As we turned into the camp spot we were followed by a little run down red car, an obnoxious little man stuck his head out of the window and yelled at us that we couldn’t camp here as it was “Power & Water” private land – yeah right!!!!!!!  No credibility, No Identification, No signs detailing “No Camping”  So of course we stayed, he was not happy.  In the morning he arrived back to make a point that he needed to get into the fenced off section where the pipes were, we were not in his way at all so I am guessing he was not happy.  We all still think he was sent by the Caravan Park at Daly Waters to stop the free camping around the Pub…….who knows.
