A much cooler night for sleeping
last night and a beautiful day once again to start our journey westwards. First stop for morning tea at Victoria River
Roadhouse 133 kms west of where we camped last night. We went for a walk along the new as well as
the old bridge over the Victoria River.
You can see why there is a new bridge, the old one must have been covered
in water quite often and there is still a large tree trunk wedged in the railing
from the last floods. Barry said he
thought he saw a crocodile but we all just guessed that was wishful thinking,
none of us could see it!!!! We are
heading to a border crossing between NT & WA where we have to hand in all
our fruit and vegies so last night I cooked most of it and had a lovely slice
of toast this morning for brekkie with
the last of the tomato and avocado…yummy.
We are currently passing through kilometres of grasslands with small
trees and termite mounds and then all of a sudden we pop over a hill and the
landscape changes dramatically. It is
now a landscape of escarpment with flat tops and large ghost gums, looks
magnificent. Have been told that a lot
of the trees don’t grow very big because of the termites, they eat them before
they can develop, maybe they don’t fancy ghost gums, who knows. Barry (as well
as everyone else) just spotted an Eagle sitting on top of road kill right on
the side of the road, unfortunately I was writing in my diary so I missed it –
still haven’t spotted my first Eagle for the whole trip. SAD… We stopped to
have a look at The Durack Memorial before deciding to stay at Timber Creek for
the night. Great pool here, nice and
cold, and the guys have gone to try their hand at fishing.
